Blog Journal 7: PBWorks is so Close

Hello friends!!!

I wanted to find a class page from a school here in Tallahassee, but I ended up having to give up on that. I did find a class page that I really liked though! I have no idea where the school is, but I like the page a lot! Its a high school social studies page, and there is not too much personal info on there. There is no information about the students or parents, but for the teacher we get his name, former occupation, his email, a photo of him, a photo he took, and a link to a photo album he has made. Mr. Negron served in Afghanistan before he was a teacher, and his image can be seen at the top of the page. I actually feel like this does not reveal too much information. I personally would not reveal that much about myself on a public site, but thats just me! I don't think Mr.Negron doing it is weird or harmful to him in any way. And, just to reiterate, he does not reveal much about himself anyway.

In terms of how I see myself using technology, I see myself using a lot of email to communicate and powerpoint to create lectures for my class. I actually really like canvas, and may end up using that or something similar. If I become a college professor then I will use whatever software that the institution I work for requires me to use. I'll use google and youtube of course, but I probably will not do anything beyond these basics. If I am a highschool history teacher or a college professor (and I WILL be one of those two), then I don't see myself relying heavily on technology. I want to keep things simple; no point in making History education complicated. I will use Kahoot though, because Kahoot is the most fun thing ever.

PBWorks is a 10/10 idea. I think that it could be an exceptionally valuable tool. I also think that it could be a lot of fun! A community website building website that is free is an incredible idea with plenty of useful applications. However, it is frustrating to use. The word processor is absolutely terrible; customizing the fonts, the size of the text, italicizing, highlighting, bolding, and copying/pasting are all tedious to the point that it feels unusable at times. Unless you use the base font it will be a struggle. Another impediment is that you cannot see what people are editing as they are editing it. Essentially, you can only effectively talk to each other while one person edits. This makes it no different from any other website. It would function better if it worked more like Google Docs.
